 Accounting Programs

Accounting services are becoming both broader and more specialized. The major changes that have occurred in the accounting profession dictate expanded and updated educational programs.

The School of Accountancy has a "new and improved" undergraduate accounting program. We have a General Concentration (AG) and a Professional Concentration (AP). You will complete 6 hours of introductory accounting courses no matter what your concentration. You can also take an internship in either concentration. When you get a BSBA in Accounting at ODU you are ready for accounting jobs in industry, government, not-for-profit, or an entry level staff position in a CPA firm. If you are considering a Master of Science in Accounting, we have a linked undergraduate and graduate program to get you started on your graduate level courses while still in the BSBA program as well. Our undergraduate accounting program not only prepares you for your first accounting job, but also for graduate study or accounting certification examinations.

Fast Track Undergraduate Admission

Undergraduate students majoring in Accounting at Old Dominion University may apply for conditional status in the Master of Science in Accounting program after completing ACCT 301, Intermediate Accounting I, with a minimum Overall and Accounting Grade Point Average of 3.00. These students can then achieve regular admission status by completing their undergraduate degree with a minimum Overall and Accounting Grade Point Average of 3.00, and obtaining an acceptable GMAT score. Students taking this option should complete an ODU Graduate Admissions Application, an essay, and a resume. They should also have their GMAT score sent directly to the Graduate Admissions office at ODU.

The minimum education necessary for the professional accountant cannot be achieved in four years of undergraduate study. Although one may sit for the Uniform CPA Exam with only 120 hours of college credit, the Virginia Board of Accountancy requires one to have 150 semester hours of education to obtain the CPA License. Additionally, the number of fields open to accounting majors has increased dramatically in recent years requiring graduates to complete specialized courses in operational auditing, fraud examination, managerial accounting, taxation, etc. Therefore, the ideal model for a professional accounting education embodies a Master of Science (MS) in Accounting program that augments a broad undergraduate education. The MS in Accounting program at Old Dominion University is designed to accommodate both full-time and part-time students with courses offered in the evenings.

 Course Delivery Methods

We currently offer the 15 hours of required accounting courses for the AG and AP programs in two formats. You can take your courses in-person at ODU's main campus or online through ODUOnline. The online courses are delivered live through WebEx, a web conferencing technology. There is usually an attendance requirement for WebEx classes or testing at some point in the semester.
