Strome College of Business' First Shipmaster Challenge 2019
"... Four pirates seized a U.S.-flagged cargo ship in the Indian Ocean on April 8, 2009. The movie Captain Phillips (2013) showed the story of this hijack. What was the name of the cargo ship that was seized?" The buzzers go off and Any Port in Strome team gives the winning answer.
On September 24th, Strome College of Business and Port of Norfolk Propeller Club hosted the first SHIPMASTER CHALLENGE 2019 among students in Strome. Yeomen, Maritime Experts and Any Port in Strome were the three student teams that competed in this Jeopardy-style challenge demonstrating their knowledge of commercial vessels, ports and terminals, waterways, rail and road transportation, industry acronyms, among others.
Port of Norfolk Propeller Club members, Terrell Moses of Tidewater Staffing and Chris Ruddick of Prime 3 Software, represented the judge panel in this contest. The judges announced that the winning team, Gage Morgan (IT major) and Andrew Jenkins (MSCM major), will be awarded the attendance to the 108th American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) Convention to be held in Norfolk, October 13-16, 2019, the largest port event in the Americas, which will allow the winning team to network with major stakeholders and leaders in the maritime industry from around the world.
"SHIPMASTER CHALLENGE 2019, a joint initiative of Strome College of Business and the Port of Norfolk Propeller Club, aims to raise maritime and supply chain management career awareness among Strome's business majors and prepare them for industry occupations. This is especially important when considering that the last Talent Alignment Strategy 2019 Report by the Hampton Roads Workforce Council found that supply chain analysts and managers are in severe shortage in our region", Dr. Ricardo Ungo, Clinical Assistant Professor of Maritime and Supply Chain Management highlighted.
Our congratulations to all participating teams: Yeomen team (Sam Fredeen and Silas Allen -MSCM majors), Maritime Experts (Charlotte De Corte and Tetiana Skorokhod - MSCM master students) and Any Port in Strome (Gage Morgan -IT major and Andrew Jenkins -MSCM major).
