Financial accounting

 The undergraduate program in accounting at Old Dominion University is one of a select group in the country with separate accreditation from AACSB-International. The program provides a broad-based education with a variety of career objectives. The Accounting General concentration (AG) provides students with technical accounting knowledge and the ability to analyze problems, communicate solutions, interact with colleagues, and successfully handle ethical issues appropriate for staff-level positions. Our undergraduate accounting program not only prepares you for your first accounting job, but also for graduate study or accounting certification examinations. The program attracts students transitioning from the military, all races, foreign undergraduates from a variety of countries, about an equal number of men and women, as well as both older and traditionally aged college students. We also do a booming business in second degree seekers. And, believe it or not, the faculty are very helpful whether it is questions about classes, school, interviews, jobs, or personal concern.

The early-entry / linked program is designed for exemplary ODU undergraduate students to begin the MBA program prior to their completion of the undergraduate degree. Early-entry undergraduate students may take MBA-level courses as early as three semesters prior to their graduation and count up to 10 graduate credit hours toward their undergraduate degree. Students must earn a minimum of 150 credit hours (120 discrete for the undergraduate degree and 30 discrete for the graduate degree) and should carefully consider their undergraduate degree program requirements when planning their course of study.

The Business Analytics major is a unique major that integrates a functional area of business with computer expertise. It is a major that develops skills in the use of the computer as a decision-making tool and provides expertise in a business field in which these skills can be applied. The modern business employer is looking for graduates who have more than just a degree in a particular functional area. They are looking for students who have multiple skills which allow them to serve their company in many ways. Business Analytics provides the training needed to develop those skills.

Business and financial background

Economics graduates are considered generalists who are well-trained in analytical thinking. Majoring in economics is a spring-board to a very wide variety of careers, not only in businesses, but also in government agencies and not-for-profit organizations. A major in economics is also excellent preparation for graduate study toward master's and doctoral degrees in economics, business, public administration, urban studies, international studies, marine affairs and other fields. Furthermore, even many law schools encourage prospective students to consider majoring in economics as undergraduates.

The Enterprise Cybersecurity program is designed to provide students with a technical background in cybersecurity technology as well as a broad perspective of the business environment in which cybersecurity plays a critical role. The major emphasizes programming, business analysis, networking, enterprise architecture and cyber defense skills; these skills can provide a basis for job entry, career development and flexibility amid the rapid changes in cybersecurity vulnerabilities and threats.

Do you enjoy numbers, analysis and "real world" applications? Old Dominion University offers a financial management degree with a choice of studies in finance. Finance majors have a choice of course offerings depending on their focus. The Finance track includes courses in financial management, financial decision-making, investments, portfolio management, banking and international financial management. Students also complete a group of core business courses offered in the College of Business and Public Administration and selected general education courses required by the University.

Management is a broad area of study within business. It covers topics from human resource management and strategic planning to leadership and innovation. Any organization, whether it is small start-up or a large Fortune 100 firm, for profit or non-profit, government or private, requires management. A management major is appropriate for those interested in careers in different types of organizations, working in human resource management/management consulting or launching a business. Most graduates will face several career changes and job choices; thus, the management major is designed to develop a student's understanding of the principles and practice of management in a global economy.

The Maritime and Supply Chain Management program is designed to provide students with an integrated working knowledge of maritime operations and supply chain management. It is the only undergraduate major of its kind east of the Mississippi River and graduates will be able to meet the needs of regional, national and international shipping, transportation and distribution industries. Students may choose either the maritime management concentration or supply chain management concentration.

Additionally, navigating the worlds of taxes, insurance, education funding, all compound the stress we all face. Individuals and their families need advice from professionals who are able to integrate all aspects of personal finance. These include insurance, investments, employee benefits, taxes, and estate planning. That is role of the personal financial planner.

The Early Start MPA (4+1) is a fast-tracked program designed for highly motivated students to continue their education immediately after their bachelor's degree. It is especially beneficial to individuals seeking work or advancement in the government or non-profit sectors. After receiving their undergraduate degree, students will continue with the Master of Public Administration program, taking courses until completing the required 39 credit hours for the degree. Students can choose to pursue a traditional MPA or concentrations in Multisector Public Service or Non-Profit Management and Governance. The MPA program also offers certificates in Public Procurement and Contract Management and Public Administration & Public Policy. Students can complete the Early Start MPA (4+1) in an intensive year of work. A potential course of study may include • Up to 9 credit hours* in the final undergraduate year • 1-3 classes in the Summer • 3-4 courses in the Fall • and 3-4 courses in the Spring The MPA program is flexible and will extend the expected completion time for a student if this proves difficult.
