ROTC Exercise 15

How to Join

Joining the ODU Army ROTC straight out of high school simply requires acceptance to ODU as a student, and enrollment in Military Science and Leadership 101 (MSL 101) during your freshman fall semester. However, even if you didn't take this route, you can join at almost any point in your college career. See the options below, and contact your recruiter with any questions.

As a freshman entering their second semester, you will need to take MSL (MIlitary Science and Leader) 101 and 102. If coming into ODU Army ROTC your spring semester, you will need to take MSL 102. You will then take MSL 201 and 101 during your sophomore fall semester.

A sophomore will need to take MSL 101 and 201 during their Fall Semester and MSL 102 and 202 during their spring semester to get caught up for the program.

It is required to have done at least 2 years of the Army ROTC course to graduate and commission. There are three options to consider if you fall under this category:

  • As a junior or senior you will need to complete MSL 101, 102, 201, and 202 to successfully go on to your junior year.
  • Taking advanced courses for your degree or attending Graduate School to get your Masters Degree.
  • To contact your local recruiter to discuss Officer Candidate School (OCS) to discuss a future career as an US Army Officer.

Joining Army ROTC as a Junior

It is possible to join the Army ROTC program at Old Dominion as a Junior. In order for that to happen, the cadet would need to attend Cadet Initial Entry Training (CIET) before joining as a Junior. Which means they would need to come in Sophomore year to see if there are any slots available during the summer. After CIET, they will be ready for the junior year of Army ROTC.
