International Studies (B.A.)

The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (BAIS) is an interdisciplinary program that offers students a chance to explore the interrelations among nations and peoples and to study world affairs from a variety of perspectives. Students have considerable flexibility to structure their academic programs to meet their particular needs and interests or to focus in a variety of geographical or topical fields. Courses can be chosen from a large number of disciplines including history, geography, political science, anthropology, economics, philosophy, languages, communication and women's studies.

What is International Studies at ODU like?

The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (BAIS) is an interdisciplinary program that offers students a chance to explore the interrelations among nations and peoples and to study world affairs from a variety of perspectives. Students have considerable flexibility to structure their academic programs to meet their particular needs and interests or to focus in a variety of geographical or topical fields.   • Interdisciplinary and Flexible: Students may take courses in a variety of disciplines on various international topics.

  • Study Abroad: Students are encouraged to study abroad. 300-400 level courses taken abroad may count toward the major.

  • Model United Nations: Students may take the ODU Model United Nations classes for credit toward the major.

What are some courses offered in International Studies at ODU?

GEOG 320:
Political Geography


A study of the relationship between geographical and political factors; the nation state and its subdivisions; interaction among states; and the political geography of everyday life. Prerequisites: Completion of General Education human behavior requirement.

POLS 323:
International Political Economy


Introduces students to the primary mechanisms of the global political economy in allocating goods, income, wealth and the means to produce them, with emphasis on the international division of labor. Prerequisites: Six hours of human behavior.

HIST 416:
States, Territories and International Organization: Evolution of the State System Since 1914


The course focuses on the evolution of international politics, diplomacy and social, cultural and economic structures in states territories, and international organizations since 1914. Emphasis on shifting European alingments since 1914, the two World Wars, the development of the bi-polar world and the development and evolution of international organizations. Prerequisites: HIST 100H or HIST 101H or HIST 102H or HIST 103H or HIST 104H or HIST 105H or HIST 126H or HIST 127H.
