Web Programming (Minor)
Building upon a foundation of programming skills and knowledge, the minor in Web Programming prepares students to take aspects of their major field of study to the Internet. Students will learn how to do much more than develop and publish a simple static webpage of plain text. Students will explore the techniques of dynamically rendering pages that communicate information, collecting and displaying data, and processing results on a server. Emerging technologies are utilized and instruction is provided by our Web Science scholars.

What is Web Programming at ODU like?

Courses
What are some courses offered in Web Programming at ODU?
CS 330:
Object-Oriented Programming and Design
Laboratory work required. The techniques and idioms of object-oriented programming in C and Java. Methods of object-oriented analysis and design with the Unified Modeling Language. Multi-thread programs, synchronization, and graphic user interfaces. Prerequisites: MATH 163, CS 252 and a grade of C or better in CS 250 or CS 333.
CS 418:
Web Programming
Laboratory work required. Overview of Internet and World Wide Web; web servers and security, HTTP protocol; web application and design; server side scripts and database integration, and programming for the Web. Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in CS 312 and CS 330.
CS 432:
Web Science
Provides an overview of the World Wide Web and associated decentralized information structures, focusing mainly on the computing aspects of the Web: how it works, how it is used, and how it can be analyzed. Students will examine a number of topics including: web architecture, web characterization and analysis, web archiving, Web 2.0, social networks, collective intelligence, search engines, web mining, information diffusion on the web, and the Semantic Web. Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in CS 361 and CS 330.
Requirements
What are the requirements to apply for Web Programming at ODU?
Students entering the Minor program in Web Programming should meet the minimum university admission requirements (Undergraduate Admission)
For completion of a minor, a student must have a minimum overall cumulative grade point average of 2.00 in all courses specified as a requirement for the minor exclusive of prerequisite courses and complete a minimum of six hours in upper-level courses in the minor requirement through courses offered by Old Dominion University.
