Middle Eastern Studies (Minor)

The minor in Middle Eastern studies focuses on the study of several aspects of Middle Eastern culture, language, politics, geography, and history. The minor consists of 15 hours of course work. Students can elect Track I which includes as a prerequisite three hours of 202-level Arabic, French, Hebrew, Farsi or any other language used in research in the region; this course is not included in the grade point average for the minor. Languages such as Armenian and Turkish could meet this requirement upon the taking of a proficiency examination. Students can also choose Track II, which is a non-language option.

What are the requirements to apply for Middle Eastern Studies at ODU?

Students entering the Minor program in Middle Eastern Studies should meet the minimum university admission requirements (Undergraduate Admission)

All students must take one core course from the following: GEOG 455 The Middle East or POLS 466 Politics of the Middle East. The remaining nine hours for Track I, or 12 hours for Track II, can be taken from a list of approved courses.

For completion of the minor, a student must have a minimum overall cumulative grade point average of 2.00 in all courses required for the minor exclusive of lower-level courses and prerequisite courses and complete a minimum of six hours in upper-level courses in the minor requirement through courses offered by Old Dominion University.
