The graduate certificate in Social Justice & Entrepreneurship focuses on students cultivating tools that are essential to launching and sustaining successful activist, community organizing, non-profit, social entrepreneurial, and social justice-based programs/initiatives. These tools include action plan development and implementation, fundraising and grant writing, social media and on-the-ground mobilization and engagement, community-driven problem solving, attracting and engaging media and stakeholders, organizational communication strategies and developing sustainable and responsive programs by identifying and assessing opportunities and resources. These skills are paired with critical tools drawn from studying the history, ethics and principles of social justice activities.

The program focuses on generating entrepreneurial solutions that solve seemingly intractable problems of social justice. In particular, students are encouraged to address problems of community equity as they address numerous issues ranging from arts to housing and in between.

Plan, direct, or coordinate the activities of a social service program or community outreach organization. Oversee the program or organization's budget and policies regarding participant involvement, program requirements, and benefits. Work may involve directing social workers, counselors, or probation officers.

Create or reproduce hand-made objects for sale and exhibition using a variety of techniques, such as welding, weaving, pottery, and needlecraft.

Provide social services and assistance to improve the social and psychological functioning of children and their families and to maximize the family well-being and the academic functioning of children. May assist parents, arrange adoptions, and find foster homes for abandoned or abused children. In schools, they address such problems as teenage pregnancy, misbehavior, and truancy. May also advise teachers.
This course is designed to equip students with tools and perspectives to be effective and knowledgeable leaders and participants in organizing communities around issues and challenges related to social justice. Course readings will be used to ground, inform, and challenge students as they explore the complex and exciting dynamics of social justice work. Students are also expected to engage in the practical work or critique and evaluation of an organizing campaign with which they are already involved or interested.
This course introduces students to fundraising principles of nonprofit organizations with an emphasis on different types of philanthropy, fundraising theories and practices, and motivations of givers. They will develop skills in creative problem solving for fundraising practice while learning to analyze and evaluate the fundraising process and methods. Additionally, students will develop the ability to synthesize and integrate current information and emerging ideas into a fundraising strategy and to think critically and analytically about a variety of fundraising perspectives.
This course will delve into activism and social change from a local and global perspective in order to enhance students' perspectives of social change as it manifests via popular media and community action.
Students entering the Certificate program in Social Justice & Entrepreneurship should meet the minimum university admission requirements (Graduate Admission)
