The Coastal Engineering Certificate Program provides practicing engineers the opportunity to study coastal engineering at the graduate level. The certificate demonstrates a basic level of understanding of the physical sciences, engineering, economics, environmental, institutional-political-social, and aesthetic constraints that influence all coastal engineering design. The certificate may also provide the necessary credentials for continuing education by state licensing boards and professional organizations. The certificate requires four graduate level courses in the specialty area of Coastal Engineering within Civil Engineering.

Internships in areas related to the program are available.
Students are encouraged to assist with faculty research projects and to present their own research at regional, national and international professional communication associations.
Opportunities to develop study abroad programs are available.
The Certificate can be completed in 2 years, and all courses are relatively self-contained so that you can begin at any semester
Check out these ideas from ODU Career Development Services and the Occupational Information Network (O*NET). A median salary is the midpoint of what people typically earn—half of those surveyed earned above the median salary, and half earned below.
MEDIAN SALARY
Research, design, plan, or perform engineering duties in the prevention, control, and remediation of environmental hazards using various engineering disciplines. Work may include waste treatment, site remediation, or pollution control technology.
MEDIAN SALARY
Perform engineering duties in planning, designing, and overseeing construction and maintenance of building structures, and facilities, such as roads, railroads, airports, bridges, harbors, channels, dams, irrigation projects, pipelines, power plants, and water and sewage systems.
MEDIAN SALARY
Design or oversee projects involving provision of potable water, disposal of wastewater and sewage, or prevention of flood-related damage. Prepare environmental documentation for water resources, regulatory program compliance, data management and analysis, and field work. Perform hydraulic modeling and pipeline design.
Nonlinear wave theories; wave forces on slender piles and seawalls; design of rubblemound structures; design philosophy, initial costs, maintenance costs, optimized design using stochastic methods; design of renourished beaches. Advanced alternative solutions for shore protection. Prerequisites: CEE 482/CEE 582.
Classical small amplitude wave theory, wave transformations in shallow water, shoaling, refraction, diffraction, reflection, breaking. Wave induced near shore currents and sediment transport processes. Alternatives to mitigate coastal erosion processes. Introduction to coastal structures. Prerequisites: permission of the instructor.
Types of dredges, factors affecting dredge performance; hydraulic dredges (cutter, hopper) and mechanical dredges systems (bucket, clamshell, etc.); shoaling rate determination; inlet sand bypassing systems; beach renourishment schemes. Design of beach renourishment/projects. Prerequisites: CEE 330.
Students entering the Certificate program in Coastal Engineering should meet the minimum university admission requirements (Graduate Admission)
An undergraduate degree from an accredited university in Engineering (Civil, Environmental, Ocean etc.) or the Oceanographic sciences (Oceanography, Geology, etc.) is preferred.
