Privacy of Student Information

Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guarantees students certain rights with respect to their education records.

House Bill 1

House Bill 1 (HB1), was passed by the Virginia General Assembly earlier this year, and becomes law on July 1, 2018. It prohibits a university from disclosing a student's email address, physical address or telephone number unless the student has affirmatively consented in writing to the disclosure.

Race/Ethnicity Reporting

Effective during the 2009-2010 academic year, federal regulations require all institutions of higher education to change how they collect and report data on race and ethnicity.

University Policy on Collection and Use of Social Security Numbers

The background information solicited by the application for admission to Old Dominion University is necessary to determine the merits of applicants for admission and the applicable tuition rate.

Use of Photos on Class Rosters

Use of student photographs for identification purposes on class rosters is restricted to the use of the individual course instructor even though student photos have been classified as "directory information" as defined by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA).
