ODURep Presents "Getting Out" at Goode Theatre
ODURep will present "Getting Out," Marsha Norman's drama about a young woman's first day of freedom after spending eight years in prison and her struggle to maintain the changes she adopted during her incarceration.
Norman won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1983 for her play "'night, Mother." She wrote the book and lyrics for the Broadway musical "The Secret Garden," for which she won a Tony Award and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical. She wrote the libretto for the musical version of "The Color Purple" and the book for the musical adaptation of "The Bridges of Madison County." "Getting Out," Norman's first play, premiered in her native Louisville, Ky., in 1979.
"Getting Out" opens at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20 in the Goode Theatre, 4601 Monarch Way. Other evening shows are set for 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21, 22, 23, 27 and 28, and March 1 and 2. There will also be a 2 p.m. matinee on March 3. Free parking is available in Garage D, 1060 W. 45th St.

Additionally, ODUrep will host a panel discussion titled "The Road Through Re-Entry" from 6 to 7 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Goode Theatre. It is free and open to the public.

- What factors drive recidivism, and how can they be minimized?
- What support is needed in the transition from incarceration?
- What challenges are faced by children involved in the justice system?
The event will be moderated by Barbara Hamm Lee, executive director and host of "Another View" on WHRV-FM.

- Alison Reed, co-founder and director of Humanities Behind Bars and assistant professor of English.
- Derek "DJ" James, resident poet and artist of Humanities Behind Bars.
- Julia Morris, Ph.D. candidate, Norris graduate research assistant for ODU's Darden College Literacy & Education Research.
- Andrea Atwell, assistant director for Tidewater Youth Services Commission's 2nd Chance/Re-Entry Program.
- Angela Antoine, founder, House of Dreams Re-Entry Consulting.
- Sandra Brandt, executive director of STEP-UP Inc.
- Kathryn Hall, co-convener of the Norfolk City Re-Entry Council.
