ODU and CHKD to host 2017 Summer Coaches Clinic

The 2017 Summer Coaches Clinic presented by Old Dominion University and the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters will provide a full day of training focused on coaching skills and sports education.

The clinic will take place June 17, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the ODU Student Recreation Center at 4700 Powhatan Avenue, in Norfolk. This free event is open to all coaches of high school and middle school teams, competitive sports clubs and recreation programs.

"We are excited to partner with the CHKD Sports Medicine Program in conducting a clinic for coaches in the Coastal Virginia area," said Lynn Ridinger, chair of the department of human movement sciences and an associate professor of sport management. "Steve Knott and I will be talking about the art of communication with players, parents, officials and other coaches. Phil Sabatini, who recently won two silver medals at the 2017 USA National Weightlifting Championships, will conduct a session on strength and conditioning. Our partners from CHKD will focus on dealing with athletic injuries and concussions."

The following sessions will be presented during the 2017 Summer Coaches Clinic:

  • Strength training and nutrition for youth athletes at all levels;
  • How to develop a successful season with players, parents, coaches and officials;
  • Athletic injuries and emergencies - What is the coach's role?;
  • Evaluation and management of concussions in youth sports;
  • Motor learning principles and their application in practice sessions; and
  • ODU recreation center tour.
