President Broderick to Deliver Keynote Address for Norfolk SPCA Event

By Noell Saunders

Old Dominion President John R. Broderick will deliver the keynote address for the Norfolk SPCA's 125th anniversary gala on Feb 10.

Since its founding in 1892, the Norfolk SPCA has worked to become a leader and partner in creating a community in which all healthy and treatable companion animals are saved.

This year's event marks twelve and a half decades of helping both animals and people through programs including sheltering, adoptions, humane education, advocacy for animal-friendly public policy and an affordable public veterinary clinic.

Norfolk City Council members Thomas Smigiel and Angelia Williams Graves will also provide remarks and share a city proclamation signed by Norfolk Mayor Kenny Alexander commemorating the milestone anniversary.

Hampton Roads historian Robert Hitchings will present a brief history of the Norfolk SPCA. Cheryl Nelson and April Woodard, co-hosts of WTKR News 3's "Coast Live," are the event emcees.

Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring will be the evening's special guest. The Norfolk SPCA is presenting an award to Herring for his contributions to the humane treatment of animals in Virginia, including creation of the nation's first animal law unit within an attorney general's office.

The gala will take place at 6 p.m. in the Rose Garden Hall of the Norfolk Botanical Garden. Tickets can be purchased through the Norfolk SPCA website, or by visiting or calling the shelter at 757-622-3319.
