More than 1,000 Coats Collected From ODU Basketball Fans; Coat Drive Continues

Two rivalry basketball games provided a huge boost for local charitable effort Coats for Families, sponsored by WAVY-TV 10 On Your Side.

More than 1,000 coats were collected at the Ted Constant Convocation Center this past weekend, as ODU women's and men's basketball hosted arch-rival Virginia Commonwealth on Friday and Saturday nights. The collection was facilitated with the assistance of ODU's Women's Initiative Network.

There are still more opportunities for members of the Old Dominion community to participate in this holiday charitable effort.

Collection bins will continue to be set up at every home game through Jan. 7. Faculty and staff can help by donating new or gently used coats at the annual holiday reception. The event will take place Tuesday, Dec. 20 at the Broderick Dining Commons from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The annual Coats for Families drive, which has been running for more than 25 years, provides new and gently used coats to people of need in the region. Last year, the effort helped collect more than 11,000 coats in Hampton Roads.

The gently used coats are cleaned at long-time Coats for Families partner Albano Cleaners.
