14th Annual Elie Wiesel Holocaust Student Visual Arts Exhibit
Winning art works from the 14th Annual Elie Wiesel Holocaust Visual Arts Competition for Students are on exhibit in the atrium at the ODU Virginia Beach Higher Education Center from May 10 through May 31.
The Holocaust Commission of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater invited students in grades 6-12 to participate. This exhibit celebrates the power of the human spirit.
"We have a record number of art entries in the competition this year, and also a record number of senior entries," said Elena Baum, director of the Holocaust Commission. Local students from Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake submitted entries to the competition. In all, 12 high schools and 12 middle schools participated, including one middle school from North Carolina.
This annual competition is named in honor of Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel. Through studying the Holocaust and its ties to modern genocide, civil rights and other historical constructs, students explore issues of moral courage as well as the dangers of prejudice, peer pressure and indifference.
The exhibit's reception will be held from 5-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18. It is free and open to the public.
ODU's Virginia Beach campus is located at 1881 University Drive at the intersection of Princess Anne Road and Concert Drive. Guests park in Lot #3. For more information, call 368-4100 or visit www.odu.edu/vabeach.
