Larry R. Hill '78

Larry R. Hill was appointed to the Board of Visitors on July 1, 2016, by Governor Terry McAuliffee and was reappointed to a second four-year term on July 1, 2020. by Governor Ralph Northam. He currently serves on the Athletics, Audit, Compliance and Human Resources, and University Advancement & University Relations Committees. He is the Board's representative to the ODU Real Estate Foundation.
Hill is President of L. R. Hill Custom Builders, Inc, which opened in 1986 and has built over 1,000 homes in the Tidewater area. He also serves as managing partner in several LLCs that own and manage commercial property. He was a nuclear engineer at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard (1980-1985) and Newport News Shipbuilding (1977-1980).
Hill received his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Old Dominion University in 1978.
Hill was a member of the Old Dominion University Athletic Foundation and served as Vice Chair (2014-2015) and Chair of the Trustees Committee (2014). He is a member of the Tidewater Builders Association Board of Directors and its Title Insurance Task Force. He was President of the Tidewater Builders Association (1998), was named Member of the Year (2013), and elected to the Housing Hall of Fame (2015). He was past Chair of several Tidewater Builders Association committees including Chesapeake Municipal Affairs, Governmental Affairs, Homearama, Investment, New Home Tour, Political Action, and Virginia Beach Municipal Affairs. He was past Chair of the Tidewater Builders Association Blue Ribbon Task Force and also served on the boards of the Home Builders Association of Virginia and the National Association of Home Builders. Hill is a founding member of the Chesapeake TowneBank Board of Directors and its Executive Committee and is also a member of the TowneBank's Financial Services Board.
Hill is the recipient of several awards, including Virginia Beach Small Business of the Year, Virginian-Pilot Best Building at the Beach, Virginian-Pilot Best Builder of Chesapeake, and over 70 People's Choice awards in Homearama events.
Hill and his wife Kathy reside in Virginia Beach and have two daughters.
