ODU Graphic Design Students were winners at the Richmond Ad Club Show!

Graphic Design in the News!

It has been an exciting year for the graphic design program and its students. The list below briefly highlights the recognition graphic design students have received for their work the 2017-2018 academic year.


June 2018

American Advertising Awards: National (ADDY'S)

Graphic Design major, Cherlyn Rebultan, was recognized as a national student silver medalist at the American Advertising Federation's awards show and gala, ADMERICA, in Chicago on June 8. Her achievement marks a successful conclusion to her journey through a three-tiered competition—local, regional, and national— with design work that first won gold in the AAF's Hampton Roads competition. Her winning entry was the Music for the Hungry poster series created in the Design Systems course. She is the second ODU student in two years to receive this prestigious award, and represent the university at the event.

ICDE: Branding Competition

The Innovation Center for Design Excellence (ICDE) is an organization dedicated to fostering opportunities for design students, organizations, and professional designers. ICDE is positioned to leverage the expertise of both the design industry, diverse corporations in all fields, business partners, young talent, and individuals who share a passion and need for design. Their design competitions are meant to showcase the most talented students within the field of Communication Design. Cherlyn Rebultan won a Gold medal and Jamie Relleva won a Silver medal for the ICDE 2018 Branding Competition.


Graphic Design Senior Exit Review

2018 Graphic Design Senior Exit Review

The Graphic Design program is proud to announce the ODU Graphic Design Senior Exit Review, an exhibition of the graduating senior portfolios, on Thursday, April 19 at the Gordon Art Galleries. A private review for professionals and faculty is from 6-7pm. The open review begins at 7pm and ends at 9pm. The event is free and open to the public. All are welcome to attend.

This year's poster was designed by Micah Kalagayan.

The Robert McCullough Prize

The Robert McCullough Prize is a cash award bestowed yearly to an exceptional Graphic Design student, regardless of class standing (graduating seniors may apply). This year's prize winner is Cherlyn Rebultan.

Richmond Ad Club

Since 1960, the Richmond Ad Club has brought together professionals from across the industry, from interns to agency CEOs, copywriters to media planners. Every year, they host a juried competition for professionals and students. This year, graphic design student Ronald Delk won a Bronze Cannonball, Anna Kiriakou won a Silver Cannonball, and alumna Mandi Volmer won a Silver Cannonball at The Richmond Ad Club Show.


March 2018

MSU GLITCH

2018 MSU GLITCH National Student Design Competition was created by the AIGA Student Group at Mississippi State University. Out of 158 entries from 20 schools nationwide, the judges chose 1 winner, 2 runner ups, and 2 honorable mentions for each category. Each winning piece will be displayed online, published in a Blurb book, and exhibited at a one night only show in Starkville, MS. Ronald Delk won 1st Runner-up for his Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil book cover, Breanna Parker won Honorable Mention for her B Poster, and Brianna Ivey won Honorable Mention for her Underwater Music Festival Poster.

American Advertising Awards: District 3 (ADDY's)

Cherlyn Rebultan and Holli Turner are 2018 District Student ADDY winners in the American Advertising Awards Student Division for AAF District 3, which includes North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Both recieved Silver ADDY's for their design work.

National Student Show and Conference

In 2004, The Dallas Society of Visual Communication created the National Student Show and Conference, the nation's largest competition and conference for graphic design students. This year, judges selected just under 200 entries out of around 1,500 submissions (roughly 7.5%). Holli Turner (2 pieces), Cherlyn Rebultan and Brianna Ivey got work into the show this year. The work was on display during the 3-day conference, which hosts around 400 students. It's exciting to see ODU student work included in such a prestigious show.

American Advertising Awards: Local (ADDY’s)

The American Advertising Awards is the advertising industry's largest and most representative competition, attracting over 40,000 entries every year in local AAF Club (Ad Club) competitions. The Addy's competition has a unique system, which includes 3 judging levels (local, regional and national). If a gold or silver is awarded, it moves to the next level. The following students won awards for their design work at the American Advertising Federation of Hampton Roads competition: Anna Kiriakou received 3 Silver ADDY awards, Breanna Parker received 2 Gold ADDY awards, Cherlyn Rebultan received 1 Silver Addy, and Holli Turner received 1 Gold and 3 Silver ADDY awards. We wish them the best of luck as their work moves to the regional competition.

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Holli Turner presented work at the Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Learning Commons of the Perry Library at ODU.


January 2018

2017 AIGA Blue Ridge Flux Student Design Competition

The largest collection to date of ODU student design work was accepted into the 2017 AIGA Blue Ridge Flux Student Design Competition. Established in 2006, Flux celebrates the best creative work produced each year by undergraduate and graduate students from across the country. Flux recognizes outstanding design work produced in the categories of identity, publication, poster, packaging, and web/interactive. This year, 278 projects were selected by a jury of creative professionals including Jeffrey Everett, Timothy J. Hykes, Ann Willoughby. 758 entries were submitted making the 2017 Flux Student Design Competition one of the largest and most competitive yet. Congrats to the following ODU students whose work was accepted into Flux: Sean Matias, David Truong (2 pieces), Julia Drake (2 pieces), Cherlyn Rebultan (5 pieces), Brandon Harrell (2 pieces), Holli Turner (4 pieces), Kelsey Kurdts, Micah Kalagayan, Colleen Davenport, Brianna Ivey (3 pieces), Breanna Parker, Ronald Delk (2 pieces), and Matt Meres (2 pieces). Cherlyn Rebultan recieved a Viewer's Choice Award for her Virginia War Museum Logo.


August 2017

Adobe Design Achievement Awards

The ADAA is a global digital media competition for student creators. Connected to industry professionals, academic leaders, and top brands, the ADAA aims to launch the next generation of student careers. 1,725 Semifinalists were chosen this year out of 6,600 entrants. Out of 91 entries submitted by ODU students, 28 made it to the Semifinalist round. Cherlyn Rebultan (5 projects), Alex Salas (4 projects), Galina Karasoy (4 projects), Holli Turner (3 projects), Mandi Vollmer (5 projects), Rachael Evin Round, Christina Vreeland, Julia Drake, Stephanie Kuper, Josh Strasshofer, and Ross Allen are official Semifinalists in the 2017 Adobe Design Achievement Awards.
